Promising three-year-old Pablo’s Poem has broken through for his first win at his third career start, taking out the TABtouch – Better Your Bet Plate (1000m) at Belmont this afternoon.
The flashy grey produced an encouraging run first-up a fortnight ago when second to Fire And Rain and closed a $3.70 second favourite today.
Agent Pippa crossed early to find the front from barrier seven, while Pablo’s Poem was able to follow the filly over and settle to her outside.
Metro Boy and Magic Planet, who were both well supported in betting, were the next pair in running.
Agent Pippa kicked back along the inside to hold a narrow advantage in the early part of the home straight, but jockey Patrick Carbery lifted Pablo’s Poem in the closing stages to win by a head.
Friday Fillies made up plenty of ground from the rear of the field to run third.
Trainer Sean Casey said the gelding had plenty of upside and would continue to get better with racing.
“He’s got a stack of ability,” he said.
“He just still a little bit immature…when he gets it altogether he’s going to be very exciting.
Casey said he also expected a step up in distance to be to Pablo’s Poem’s liking and felt the 1000m would be too short today.
“We will see how he pulls up, I’d like to be able to train him for the Guineas,” he said.
“When I looked at all the videos this morning I thought it was going to be a tough task for him.”
Meanwhile, it was an emotional win for trainer Robyn Cottman and jockey Julien Kokotajlo in the Rentokil Initial Maiden (1400m).
It was the first metropolitan Saturday win for the pair and Cottman’s first win since 2015.
“She did everything right,” Cottman said.
“We knew if she had the right run, she’d be in the finish.”
