Lady Cosmology was the star of Ascot’s Melbourne Cup day meeting, taking out the Listed Burgess Queen Stakes (1400m).
The Universal Ruler filly led all the way for jockey Paul Harvey and headlined a big day for trainer Simon Miller.
Miller had Flirtini run second and Shapita run fourth in the $100,000 event, while race favourite Arcadia Queen was third.
Miller said Lady Cosmology deserved to add another blacktype win to what has been an impressive start to her career.
“If you look at her race record, it’s impeccable,” he said.
“She’s been in Stakes races and could’ve won nearly all of them.
“She’s every bit as equal to the like of a Whispering Brook, they just thrive off racing.”
Miller’s other runner in the race Market Ruler finished in the second half of the field.
It was Miller’s second success in the three-year-old fillies feature, after he won in 2013 with Miss Rose De Lago.
Miller said he did have a few concerns about Lady Cosmology just prior to the race, after she played up in her race day stall.
“She got revved up prior in the stalls, so we just had to chill her out,” he said.
“She’s a good filly going places and Flirtini is a brilliant filly as well.
“She puts so much in, but she can because she bounces out of it so well.”
Miller said he would wait until later in the week before he makes a decision on whether to run Lady Cosmology in the Group 3 Champion Fillies Stakes (1600m) on Saturday week, or wait for the Group 2 WA Guineas (1600m) on November 24.
Magical Charge was Miller’s other winner on yesterday’s Ascot program, taking out the Salinger Maiden (1200m).
The filly was narrowly beaten on debut at Belmont in September and went one better yesterday, despite a late betting drift.
Magical Charge is set to be aimed towards the Listed Placid Ark Stakes (1200m) on November 24, a race Miller won last year with Ocean Jewel.
The filly’s win also bought up the first leg of a winning double on the day for jockey Patrick Carbery, who won aboard Moet De Vega later in the day.
Chris Parnham recorded a winning double aboard Alta Sull’amore and Nicconi’s Boy.
Leading jockey William Pike had a winning treble with Black Attack, M’lady and Royal Statue.
However, Pike was suspended for 10 days later in the meeting for his ride on Crystal Valley, meaning he will miss WA Champion Fillies Stakes day.
