Racing and Wagering WA (RWWA) has announced that due to the forecast of extreme heat the Mt Barker race meeting on Sunday, 20 January has been cancelled.
To maintain racing opportunities for participants all races scheduled at Mt Barker, excluding the feature Mungrup Stud Sprint, will be transferred to a new race meeting at Albany on this day.
The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a forecast for Mt Barker of 41 degrees for Sunday while the forecast for Albany is significantly cooler at 33 degrees.
RWWA is working with the Mt Barker Turf Club to re-schedule their ‘Grapes and Gallops’ race meeting to a suitable date, again featuring the $100K Mungrup Stud Sprint.
RWWA Manager Commercial Racing and Planning David Hunter said that the welfare of our people and animals is paramount, and transferring Sunday’s race meeting from Mt Barker to the milder weather conditions in Albany is the most sensible outcome given the circumstances.
