No Fears For Willis In WA Derby

Trainer Chris Willis has been waiting expectantly for Ping Me Another to have a crack at the WA Derby (2400m).
The build-up commenced last month when Ping Me Another sprung a big surprise at big odds to run an eye-catching fourth to Adornment in the Listed Ascot 1000 Guineas (1800m).
That momentum increased and grew to another level two weeks later following the Musket filly’s runner-up finish to Jed Affair in the Listed Natasha Stakes (2200m).
But the clincher for Willis and what that turned a pipe dream into reality came in the Group 2 WA Oaks (2400m) when Ping Me Another ran a neck second to Dark Choice.
However, even with her impressive lead-up form, Ping Me Another is considered a long shot to win the WA Derby and is rated one of the outsiders in the field of 14 at $23.
Dominating the TAB market is Regal Power, the raging $1.60 favourite after an arrogant win against the boys in the Melvista Stakes (2200m), scoring by an easy 2 ¼ lengths.
The son of Pierro is trained by Grant and Alana Williams, raced by Bob Peters and will be ridden by William Pike, who combined have won the WA Derby 21 times.
Despite going up against the powerful Williams-Peters and Pike partnership, Willis says he holds no fears in the Derby. He believes Ping Me Another can cause an upset.
“I think so, I really think so,” Willis told Tabradio.
“I imagine Cockney Crew will lead and will cart us right into the race.
“We should box-seat and hopefully a few of the cerise and white can get in each other’s way out wide and we will see how we go.
“She went really well at the track (Tuesday) and came back looking bright.
“We are only a couple of days away and the action is on.”
Shaun McGruddy retains the ride on Ping Me Another. The $3000 bargain-buy has drawn ideally in barrier two.
Williams and Peters will also have hopes with second favourite Dark Choice ($8.50) and Adornment ($18).
