Thoroughbred Associates Nominee: Robert Holmes A Court

Hall of Fame
Robert Holmes A Court_bw

Holmes A Court had established Heytesbury Stud at Keysbrook as a showpiece breeding property and was establishing a second Australian stud at Wallan in Victoria and purchased Trelawney Stud at Waikato to give his enterprise a base in New Zealand before his untimely death in 1990. His sudden death at the age of 53 years was a tragic blow to the WA and Australian breeding industry. Holmes A Court, who bred and owned Black Knight, the winner of the 1984 Melbourne Cup, had 104 beautifully bred stallions, broodmares, yearling and racehorses on his 303.5 hectare property. Three of the four sires have won four of Australia’s major races: Family Of Man (Cox Plate & Australian Derby), Silver Knight (Melbourne Cup) and Pago Pago (Golden Slipper).
