Ted McAuliffe won the 1927 Boulder Cup as an apprentice, but soon turned his hand to training because of weight issues. He was the first trainer to prepare three successive WA Derby winners with Precedent (1948), Prediction (1949) & Jovial Lad (1950). He also won three Perth Cups with Ghurka (1949), Bay Count (1963) and Royal Coral (1966). His dominance of major Perth races extended to the Railway Stakes with his runners, Hinda (1941), Flame Lady (1942) and Thorium (1946) successful in the premier mile race. Other notable achievements included four Lee Steere Stakes, four Cox Stakes, three Strickland Stakes and the Winterbottom Stakes twice. Noted as a great conditioner of horses, McAuliffe was WA’s leading trainer in the 1946-47 season.
