WA galloper Trap For Fools has broken through for a maiden Group 1 win in this afternoon’s Mackinnon Stakes (2000m) at Flemington.
In a thrilling finish to the final Group 1 of the Flemington carnival, Irish Derby winner Latrobe got on level terms with Trap For Fools.
However, the tough gelding wasn’t to be denied hanging on to win by a nose and recorded a maiden Group 1 win for trainer Jarrod McLean as well.
Jockey John Allen sent Trap For Fools straight to the lead from barrier eight and set a solid tempo in front.
Allen asked Trap For Fools for an effort approaching the 300m and he was able to fight off Latrobe and last week’s Victoria Derby winner Extra Brut.
Making the win all the more sweet was Trap For Fools was excluded from the Cox Plate just a fortnight earlier.
McLean said he was thrilled to win his first Group 1 and lauded Trap For Fools toughness in a close finish.
“Obviously I was hoping he could kick,” he said.
“He sustained the gallop to the line.
“It was disappointing about the Cox Plate, but on that occasion I said things happen for a reason.”
McLean also paid tribute to Lindsey Smith, who trained Trap For Fools in WA.
“He’s been terrific to me,” he said.
“Obviously he had Cougar Express who won me a Grand National, which was a big thrill.”
