Albany-based trainer Steve Wolfe is at a loss to explain Lordhelpmerun’s listless last-start run, but he is optimistic the Playing God gelding can bounce back to his best in Saturday’s $100,000 Listed Fairetha Stakes (1400m) at Ascot.
The Group 3 WA Sires’ winner started favourite in the Belgravia Stakes, but in a fast run race he performed well below his best and dented his WA Guineas (1600m) hopes when he finished six lengths 13th to Mystery Miss.
“I’m not sure and don’t know why he put in a run like that,” Wolfe said.
“He was off the bridle the whole way, but has been fully tested and there is nothing to fault.
“His work since has been good and I’m just putting it down to just a bad day.
“He is happy within himself and all appears to be in good order.
“If he races to his best I am sure he will be more than competitive.
“I would be very disappointed if he doesn’t bounce back.
“If he doesn’t he will go straight to the paddock.”
In a field of 14 starters in the Fairetha Stakes Lordhelpmerun will jump from barrier seven. Shaun McGruddy retains the ride.
The three-year-old has eased from $8.50 to $9 with TABtouch. Chix Pix, a fast-finishing second in the Belgravia Stakes, is the $4.60 favourite.
In an open betting race Regal Power is at $7, Black Sabbath ($7.50), True Attraction ($8), The Velvet King ($8), True Defender ($8.50), Unikat ($9) and Final Hearing ($9).
The Belgravia Stakes was Lordhelpmerun’s sole failure from six career starts. The $25,000 yearling has won twice and been placed three times including a third to Valour Road in the Group 2 Karrakatta Plate (1200m) early this year.
