Originating in England in the late 1700’s the Standardbred received its name in the United States in 1879 when it became necessary for horses to meet a speed standard before they could be admitted into the American Trotting Register.
Standardbreds are very easily educated, very adaptable and display a willingness to please. They possess calm temperaments and are generally ‘good doers’ who hold their condition well. Standardbreds are popular among pony clubbers, adult riders and beginner riders and are commonly used as pleasure hacks. They can also excel in disciplines such as endurance, showjumping, show horse and stock work.
Standardbreds are generally of solid colours but sometimes appear in grey and skewbald colours and range in height from 14 to 16 hands. They are sensible and willing horses with kind temperaments and accept new challenges with interest and enthusiasm.
