Greyhound litters registered for racing purposes only
In October 2020 two litters of greyhound puppies were notified to RWWA, both which were out of unnamed female greyhounds who were subsequently named RUTHLESS RUTH and JUMPING JAZZ. These litters were born 24 October 2020 (six males and two females) and 31 October 2020 (three males and two females) respectively.
The owner of the two unnamed female greyhounds advised that they had just returned from New South Wales, and it appeared that they had become pregnant while being domiciled in that jurisdiction.
An ongoing investigation by NSW Greyhound Welfare & Integrity Commission (GWIC) stewards, which included DNA testing of two possible sires, has failed to identify the sire of the two litters of puppies. DNA testing has shown the dams of the respective litters to be RUTHLESS RUTH AND JUMPING JAZZ.
Further DNA testing was able to establish that while the sire remained unknown, the puppies were proven to have been sired by a greyhound.
Both litters of puppies have now therefore been registered in accordance with the below RWWA Rule of Greyhound Racing 139 (3):
R139 Doubt of identity or parentage
(3) Where in the opinion of the Controlling Body the parentage of a greyhound cannot be confirmed by DNA fingerprinting, the Controlling Body may register such greyhound “for racing purposes only”.
These puppies will not be eligible to be registered for breeding purposes until a registered greyhound is proven to be the sire.
The GWIC (NSW) investigation into this matter is continuing.
