Thoroughbred – Stewards’ Inquiry – Ascot Race Meeting, Saturday 16 December 2015 – Race 3, the Perth Instagram Handicap (1600m)
RWWA Stewards today completed the adjourned inquiry from the above race into the reasons for Apprentice Jordan Turner (EXCELLENTLY) and Jockey Chris Parnham (CLASSY TWISTER) being dislodged passing the 400m.
vidence was taken from Apprentice Jordan Turner and Jockeys’ Chris Parnham, Troy Turner (CHARM DESTINY) and Jason Whiting (BAGGY EYES). Trainer Mr Colin Webster was also present to represent Apprentice Turner.
It was established that near the 400m, Apprentice Turner urged EXCELLENTLY forward and improved to the inside of CHARM DESTINY where there was insufficient room and allowed his mount to travel too closely to the heels of that mare before then contacting its heels and blundering causing him to be dislodged with BAGGY EYES being severely checked and CLASSY TWISTER contacting the heels of EXCELLENTLY which veered outwards sharply resulting in Jockey Parnham also being dislodged. GREAT ODYSSEY (Clint Johnston-Porter), DRUPA (Jake Casey), LOVERA (Jarrad Noske), CAPPO D’ORO (Jerry Noske) and SAXONATOR (Danny Miller) all received interference to varying degrees in this incident.
Apprentice Jordan Turner pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under the provisions of AR.137(a) for allowing his mount to improve to the inside of CHARM DESTINY passing the 400m where there was insufficient room to do so and travel too closely to the heels of that mare which caused the incident as described above.
Apprentice J Turner subsequently had his permit to ride in races suspended for a period of 4 weeks to commence from midnight Wednesday, 30 December 2015 until midnight Wednesday, 27 January 2016. In assessing penalty, Stewards took into account the high level of carelessness and interference, his overall record in relation to careless riding which revealed three prior suspensions over an 18 month period, his inexperience as an apprentice rider and his guilty plea.
