Stewards’ Inquiry – Thoroughbreds
23 January, 2009
Thoroughbred
RWWA Stewards today concluded an adjourned inquiry from the Ascot race meeting conducted on Wednesday the 14th January, 2009 into the reason why Jockey P. King was dislodged from his mount BASKERVILLE STREET at the 600m in Race 1, The Westspeed 3 Year Old Handicap (1000M). Evidence was taken from jockeys P. King, J. Brown (DARNTIME), S. McGruddy (ALL CLASS) and Senior Steward Mr H Taylor.
After consideration of the evidence given and viewing the patrol films Stewards were of the opinion that DARNTIME (J. Brown) was clear of other runners when obtaining the lead and its rider had maintained a reasonable pace running to the first turn. ALL CLASS (S. McGruddy) which was following and had a tendency to lay outwards, commenced to race ungenerously approaching the 600m and as a result got its head in the air. Despite the efforts of its rider to restrain his mount the filly shifted outwards and bumped with BASKERVILLE STREET. ALL CLASS became unbalanced and then again shifted outwards abruptly and bumped heavily with BASKERVILLE STREET which in turn made contact with ALALBA (Apprentice M. Morita). As a result of this second bump with ALL CLASS, this caused BASKERVILLE STREET to mistride, blunder and fall dislodging its rider P. King.
The Stewards were satisfied that no rider was at fault in this incident and the fall resulted from the racing manners of ALL CLASS. Trainer Mr S. Wolfe was advised that the filly must barrier trial to the satisfaction of the Stewards prior to racing again.
