Thoroughbred Stewards Inquiry – Owner Mr Cameron Macalister
Racing and Wagering Western Australia (RWWA) stewards have concluded an investigation and inquiry concerning owner Mr Cameron Macalister.
Stewards confirmed that Mr Macalister was sentenced to a period of imprisonment on 9 March 2021 for 4 years and 8 months. The convictions leading to Mr Macalister’s imprisonment were not declared to RWWA as required under the Rules of Racing and conditions of registration.
Stewards established that Mr Macalister had been registered as an owner holding a small percentage share in several horses prior to his convictions and sentencing.
Local Rule 233 sets out in mandatory terms that any person sentenced to a period of imprisonment shall be disqualified for the same period. In accordance with the rule, stewards determined to disqualify Mr Macalister for the same period as the term of imprisonment effective as at the date of imposition of sentence.
A disqualified person must not during the period of their disqualification “share in the winnings of any horse” or “receive any direct or indirect financial or other benefit derived from thoroughbred racing and/or breeding in Australia” (refer Australian Rules of Racing 263 (i) and (o)).
AR 224 provides that where any prize has been awarded to a person who is subsequently found by the stewards not to be entitled to it by reason of disqualification of that person’s horse or otherwise, that prize must on demand be repaid.
By virtue of the disqualification, Mr Macalister is not entitled to any prize money earned when disqualified.
The Stewards have therefore directed that the winnings paid out totalling $1,079.63 be repaid.
