LEW DORSA MEMORIAL FINAL TO REMEMBER
Saturday night’s Greyhounds WA Lew Dorsa Memorial Final at Cannington has drawn together a first class lineup with half of last month’s Group 1 Perth Cup field engaged.
Buster The Brute finished third in the Group 1 classic behind Simon Told Helen with Werewolf Monelli finishing 4th, Banjo’s Girl finishing sixth and Mermaid Monelli was at the tail after finding bother.
Of the remainder of the field Black Signature won a Perth Cup Consolation, Rolo Monelli was a runner up in a Consolation, Redcap Monelli was runner-up in the major Perth Cup Consolation and Eighty Eight was unplaced in a Perth Cup Consolation.
Quite simply there are a stack of in-form sprinters heading in to this event on top of their game.
Trainer David Hobby has been in a hot run of form with his kennel and has Rolo Monelli in box 2, Werewolf Monelli in box three, Mermaid Monelli in box five and Redcap Monelli in box 7.
When asked of the chances of his quartet he found it difficult to split them.
“All four of my dogs are ticking over really nicely but this is a smart lineup and they will need everything to go right for them to win.” Hobby said
“Rolo Monelli is not likely to be in the early speed battle and should get a nice run on the fence, Werewolf and Mermaid are both quick early bit would probably want a little break turning for home and Redcap is very strong but he is likely to be spotting some of the speed dogs a fair head start.” Hobby added.
“I have plenty of respect for the other runners ; Buster The Brute was excellent in the Perth Cup Final from box one, Eighty Eight is so consistent in this grade, Black Signature is in great form and Banjo’s Girl has a top record from the pink. It should be a great race.” Hobby suggested.
Last week Flake Monelli broke the 600 metre Track Record running 34.32 seconds and Hobby was delighted with the performance.
“I don’t want to sound cocky but I wasn’t all that surprised when the time went up on the board.” Hobby said.
“When she leads she is a very quick bitch and some of her recent wins over all distances have been very slick.” Hobby added.
Flake Monelli returns to the 715 metre trip on Saturday night where she will exit box seven in the Property Plus Real Estate Free For All.
“She has come through last week’s run really well and if she can lead she will be awfully hard to beat again.” Hobby suggested.
Another of Hobby’s kennel stars Zack Monelli was runner-up in the Perth Cup and he is engaged in a Mixed Grade ¾ over the 520 metres.
“Zack has been hitting the line really well in his races and with a clean run he should take some stopping again on Saturday night.” Hobby concluded.
