With the support of BioJohn Superstore, Off the Track spread our wings and hosted the inaugural Off the Track Showman Day on Saturday 11th July at the State Equestrian Centre.
Showman consists of a dressage, in-hand and show jumping phase. Held at the State Equestrian Centre in Brigadoon, entries were open exclusively to retired Thoroughbred and Standardbred racehorses only and was very well attended, with over 100 entries received.
It was a superb day in terms of horse & rider behaviour, their turn out & enjoyment and surprisingly, even the good weather played a part. To see so many of our retired racehorses so well loved & looked after and thriving in their post racing lives was very exciting and heart warming.
Some of the horses who competed on the day ranged from the popular grey Ken’s Double, now an 11 year old and winner of over $400,000 in stake earnings, to Saximo, a beautiful 4 year old gelding trained by Donna Riordan who only ever trialled and the grand old 18 year old gentleman Westsure, who retired from racing in 2002 and is still going strong and won his class on the day.
Whether successful as a racehorse or not, our Showman Day highlighted the ability for ex racehorses to lead successful lives and enjoy long term second careers post racing, regardless of their ability on the racetrack.
