Bernadette May won the Fashions on the Field held at the Dongara Cup and has also now won a place in the WA Country Cups Fashions on the Field Wildcard Semi-Final at Perth Racing on Saturday, December 2!
The winner of the Semi-Final will then compete against the other nine Finalists, with the winner receiving a trip for two to London to attend Royal Ascot with Motive Travel, $10,000 spending money thanks to TABtouch, and more!
WA Country Cups caught up with Ms May to talk about country racing and racing fashion, as well as the upcoming Final, here is what she had to say:
1. What do you love about country racing? I love how intimate and connected country meets are. You can go along to the track with a couple of your friends and then bump into a whole heap of crew that you know. It’s like a big reunion every time!
2. How long have you been going to the races for and what are your favourite memories? I have been going to the races for around 10 years now, but have only just started entering FOTF in the last year. I have a fantastic memory of rocking up at Carnarvon this year with NO cash because I didn’t realise the track didn’t have eftpos! The bus driver was lovely enough to drive just ME back into town to withdraw some cash and then back to the meet. That’s the sort of hospitality you get in the country and it’s just so wonderful.
3. Why do you enter Fashions on the Field? I enter because I love the process of putting an outfit together. Its a real art to be able to imagine how a dress will go with all of your accessories and to create something that you will feel proud to wear. I love going along to the meet and admiring everyone else’s creations as well.
4. Describe your style? I wish my style was modern, but it always tends to lean toward classic. I’m trying at the moment to be more modern classic! I’m drawn to bright colours and contrasting looks.
5. What tips do you have for ladies entering Fashions on the Field? As a starting point; chose styles that you know suit you. I know by speaking with a lot of girls that they can become overwhelmed with the possibilities and choices available. I always say to them that they should go with the outfit that make them smile when they look in the mirror.
6. What are some of your favourite things about Dongara? I absolutely love Port Dension. I have so many memories from my childhood of jumping off the jetty, getting stung by jellyfish, playing on the playground (which trumped anything we had in Geraldton) and eating fish and chips on the beach.
7. What does it mean to you to be going to Ascot to compete in the Wildcard semi-final? I’m really just very grateful and humbled to be attending the final. To me it doesn’t matter if I place or not. I’m just excited to have the opportunity to hang out with a bunch of fellow fashionistas and enjoy the experience.
