Star Risca with his new family at Mungrup Stud.
Star Risca foaled at Mungrup Stud in Narrikup, Mount Barker, and is by the sire Kenvain and out of the mare Rijinsky.
Branded with the notoriety of the famous lazy G O W, Star Risca was born on 10th December 2003 and proved to be more than a handy racehorse for his owners and trainer.
Jumping from the barriers for a total of 49 race starts, Star Risca came home with a pay cheque 28 times.
A favourite within the training stables for his superb temperament and for being a safe ride, Star Risca was one of those horses who always made the grinding early morning starts worthwhile.
Spotting Star Risca in a paddock 12 months ago, Off the Track (OTT) Coordinator Sharon Joyce was determined to find a forever home for the lovely natured gelding.
When signs of a slight lameness made it evident that a career with the Riding for the Disabled was out of the question, Sharon had to think outside the square.
Lucky for Star Risca, Mungrup Stud were looking for an older horse to live with the newly weaned foals as a nanny, and so the circle of life was complete and Star Risca is now back where he first began!
Loyal, fierce, consistent racehorses such as Star Risca are what sparks the passion for racing, so it seems only fitting for a racehorse who earned $438, 650 in stakes winnings to live the entirety of his life healthy, happy and well cared for.
Thanks to Mungrup Stud, Star Risca now has a new purpose in life and is in his element working as a nanny for all the babies at Mungrup.
Not only was he a Superstar Racehorse in his time, he is now a Superstar Nanny and as you can see from the photos he is clearly loving his new career.
The humility and generosity of Mungrup Stud is commendable and greatly appreciated. Responding to calls for assistance is what makes the racing industry so great.
Off the Track sincerely thank Ann, Tom and their staff at Mungrup Stud for their compassion and generosity in giving a champion of our WA turf a home.
