25 January, 2017
Thoroughbred
Every great jockey has a great story to accompany their career, Darren Gauci is no exception.
After an inspiring 35 years in the saddle, Gauci has pulled the pin on his riding days with an impressive tally of 2500 wins including 35 Group One titles.
Affectionately known as ‘The Gouch’, the 51 year-old, father of four will leave the gates for the last time on Saturday.
Gauci spoke to TABradio’s The Sports Daily about his new role as an Apprentice Master and his successful career on the race track.
“It’s been a good journey, it’s been a good career and I have no regrets. I am (at peace) with the decision.
“I anticipated maybe riding for a few more years, I felt I could have.
“But this job came along and I decided to apply because in two years’ time it might not be there.
“This is something I really wanted to do once I retired from riding, so I took that opportunity.”
Under the guiding eye of trainer, Frank King, Gauci claimed three Victorian jockey premierships before he hit the age of 21.
Who better to teach the fresh crop of up and coming riders than one of Australia’s most successful apprentices of his time.
