Jockey Patrick Carbery is still upbeat heading into Saturday’s Listed WAROA-Belmont Guineas (1600m) with his new mount Necklet.
Carbery’s original Guineas ride Paddy’s Shadow wasn’t nominated for the $100,000 event after missing track gallops in the lead up.
However, Carbery has picked up the ride on the Fred Kersley-trained filly, following her fifth to Roganella over 1400m a fortnight ago.
Carbery said he was fortunate Kersley gave him the opportunity, following Paddy’s Shadow’s withdrawal.
“I saw Fred had a couple of runners in it, and a few of mine had gone by the wayside, so I put my hat in the ring and was lucky enough to get on her,” he said.
“Looking at the replay of her last run, she looked like she had every chance.
“Apparently she has trained on well, and the mile isn’t beyond her, so hopefully we can get some blacktype for the owners.”
Necklet is one of three runners in the race for Kersley, with fellow filly Mizlecki and WA Sires Produce Stakes winner Debellatio also engaged.
Roganella remains a steady $2.90 favourite with TABtouch for the Guineas, ahead of Mizlecki at $3.50, while Necklet shares the third line of betting with State Prosecutor at $6.
Carbery said the leading two in the market were the ones to beat going off their respective last start performances.
“I thought Roganella was very impressive,” he said.
“He couldn’t have been any more impressive the way he hit the line, and I think he will relish the mile.
“Mizlecki also hasn’t done anything wrong, but it’s an even race outside of that.”
Carbery also has the ride on last start winner Sovereign Trade in the Dr James Forbes Handicap (1300m), and is one of four runners under double figure odds.
The veteran jockey said he expected the Bernie Miller-trained runner to get every possible chance to record his third straight win.
“He seems to have trained on really well,” he said.
“He’s drawn a sticky barrier, but I like the horse.
“It was a good solid win last start, he is up in grade but I’m sure he will handle it well.”
The other Listed event on tomorrow’s Belmont program is the H.G Bolton Sprint (1200m), where Carbery has the ride on War God for trainer Neville Parnham.
The consistent five-year-old is the outsider of the 10 horse field, and despite having the ride on him for the first time, Carbery is upbeat of a bold showing.
“Neville wouldn’t be putting him in the race for no reason,” he said.
“Hopefully he can recapture some of the form he had at Ascot.”
Tomorrow’s Ascot meeting gets underway at 12.32pm, with the Belmont Guineas at 3.40pm.
