Young reinsman Jayden Brewin said he had no hesitation in choosing Western Australian to broaden his racing knowledge and experience.
The talented 17-year-old says his week in the west and competing against Perth’s best drivers will be a major boost to his burgeoning career.
The Adelaide teenage sensation is considered by learned judges to be one of South Australia’s most gifted driving talents and a rising star.
Backing their judgement was Brewin’s impact in 2016-17, collecting 55 winners in Adelaide and seven in Melbourne to cap an outstanding first full season in the sulky.
Highlights included his first victory with The Octagon, a treble at Globe Derby in March and victory in the G.O Silke Plate (1800m), a raced coveted by South Australian junior and concession drivers.
Brewin finished 22 wins clear of Michael Smith in the Young Drivers’ Premiership and fifth in the State Drivers’ premiership behind Danielle Hill.
Brewin and contemporary Brodie Webster were the successful recipients of Harness Racing South Australia’s (HRSA) Scholarship programme.
The scheme is designed to reward and encourage participants who have ability, talent and motivation to pursue a career in harness racing.
A segment of the schlorship involves a placement program and Brewin said he had no hesitaion in electing Perth over other states.
“I cannot wait to get over to Perth and very much see it as a once in a lifetime opportunity,” Brewin said.
“It’s a great opportunity to see and learn first-hand from some of the biggest names in Australian harness racing.
“I’m there for a week and hopefully I can catch up with Gary Hall Jnr and Chris Voak who I know by name only.
‘I’m going over with my eyes wide open and an attitude to learn as much as I can.
“Colin Brown has also been very helpful in arranging the logistics in coming across.
“I’m excited about coming over and hopefully I can pick up some drives as well.
“I really see this experience as being beneficial to my career.”
RWWA Harness Driving Coach and WA Racing Hall Of Fame inductee, Trevor Warwick, who oversees the development of Perth’s junior drivers, said Brewin was building an impressive reputation.
“He probably puts himself into the class of ‘whiz kid’ at this stage of his career, Warwick said.
“He has done everything you would expect of someone and has only been driving for 12-months.
“He is well on his way to be one of the best around for a while.
“He is on the ball and that is the main thing.”
Brewin will available to take drives at the following meetings:
October 13: Gloucester Park.
October 14: Wagin
October 15: Northam
October 16: Pinjarra.
October 17: Gloucester Park.
