Harness – Stewards Inquiry – Trainer Mrs Amy Stone – BORN A TIGER NZ
On Wednesday 4 April 2018, RWWA Stewards conducted an inquiry into the report received from the ChemCentre in Perth, that Firocoxib had been detected in in a blood sample taken from BORN A TIGER after competing and winning in Race 1 at Albany on 20th January 2018. This finding was verified by the Australian Racing Forensic Laboratory in NSW.
At the inquiry evidence was heard from the registered Trainer Mrs. Amy Stone, her husband licensed trainer/driver Mr. Tim Stone, RWWA Industry Veterinarian Dr. J Medd, RWWA Senior Investigator Mr G.Johnson, Chem Centre representative Ms K. Wilson and Veterinarian Dr. Alan McGregor who was called by Mr and Mrs Stone.
Subsequently Mr & Mrs Stone pleaded guilty to the following charges:
Mrs Amy Stone
- Charge 1 – RWWA Harness Rule of Racing 190 with the particulars being that as the trainer, she presented BORN A TIGER NZ to race in Race 1 at Albany on 20 January 2018 where it raced and finished first, not free of the prohibited substance FIROCOXIB.
- Charge 2 – RWWA Harness Rule of Racing 190B(1)(b) with the particulars being that Mrs Stone did fail to comply with the provisions of rule 190B (1)(b) in that she did not keep and maintain a log book recording details of treatment administered to horses in her care.
Mr Tim Stone
- Charge 1 – RWWA Harness Rule of Racing 190 with the particulars being that Mr T Stone, was left in charge of the horse BORN A TIGER NZ when it was presented to race in Race 1 at Albany on 20 January 2018 where it raced and finished first, not free of the prohibited substance FIROCOXIB
Following deliberations, Stewards today determined to issue the following penalties with respect to these charges.
Mrs A Stone: Charge 1 – Fine of $2,500 and cancellation of Trainer’s licence
Charge 2 – Fine of $300
Mr. T Stone: Charge 1 – Fine of $2,500
Further pursuant to Harness Rule of Racing 195, BORN A TIGER NZ has been disqualified from the race in question with the placings to be amended accordingly with the prizemoney to be returned.
In determining penalty Stewards took into account, amongst other things:
• The personal circumstances of Mr and Mrs Stone.
• Their unblemished prior record in these matters
• The nature of the substance, with it being classified as a Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory medication that was present at the property as it had been prescribed for the treatment of their pet dog.
• That no accepted explanation was determined for the presence of the prohibited substance in BORN A TIGER NZ.
• Past cases where predominantly fines had been imposed in relation to this class of substance.
