With William Pike weaving his magic at Belmont and feature races in Melbourne and Sydney, it would have come as no surprise if a non-tab meeting at Mt Magnet escaped racings attention.
But for one young apprentice rider, Beaux Banovic-Edwards, regardless of the setting or stature of the race meeting, it will be a day that she will never forget.
Less than a month since commencing her apprenticeship, Edwards savoured her first win as a jockey when she guided home Next Dawn to a 1 ¼ length victory.
“It was pretty exciting,” said Edwards.
“It makes it all seem worthwhile.
“I was over the moon and really happy.
“A lot of the other riders were cheering me on.
“Hopefully there are more wins to come.”
20-year-old Edwards said host trainer Brett Pope and her father, David Edwards, a former top Perth trainer, had been influential in her build-up to being a jockey.
“Brett has done heaps for me and is always trying to make me improve,” Edwards said.
“Dad rang me on the morning of the race to give advice and riding tactics.
“He was one of the first people to contact me and was very happy.
“He said ‘see what happens when you pay attention listen to me.’
Racing and Wagering Western Australia (RWWA) jockey coach, John Claite, said Edwards was getting reward for her hard work.
“She works hard and is a good listener,” Claite said.
“She deserves to get her first win and I’m sure there is more to come.”
