Reed Forecasts Classic Nullarbor
Trainer Mike Reed has boldly declared Friday’s Nullarbor (2536m) has the potential to be one of the best races Gloucester Park plays host to.
Reed guaranteed himself a runner in the race when Blitzembye finished second to Diego in last Friday’s Sky Racing Pace.
The six-year-old will run in the Swandoo Harness Racing syndicate slot, which is held by his owners Jim and Willie Giumelli.
Reed said he expected the $1.25 million event to be a great spectacle.
“It’s going to be a great race,” Reed told TABradio.
“It’s better than a Pacing Cup because we have the interstaters here.
“I was talking to a couple of trainers here yesterday in Melbourne and they said if the draw then they will be hard to beat.
“It could be one of the best and even fields I’ve seen for a long time.”
Blitzembye is the $34 outsider with TABtouch for the Nullarbor, with Minstrel heading up the market at $4.
Despite being unable to register a Free-For-All win, Blitzembye has performed admirably in the class over the past 12 months.
The gelding has been placed in the highest company on eight occasions in that time, including a second to Magnificent Storm in December’s Village Kid Sprint (1730m).
Reed said he was under no illusion about the enormity of the task in front of his stable star.
“I hope we draw well and we can get on the back of a good horse,” he said.
“He will sit on a fast speed.
“If we can run a place, we will be wrapped, and I always say if you can run a place then you can win.”
The barrier draw for the Group 1 event takes place tomorrow.
