Female Jockeys Go Chasing

A group chat with a leading WA female apprentice jockey has led to 10 young women partaking in ownership of a racing greyhound.
The 10 women got involved through Jerry Noske, who rides for thoroughbred owner and greyhound trainer Jackie and Gary Wilson.
The opportunity arose when Jerry was approached and asked if she was interested in becoming a greyhound owner, and being the passionate animal lover that Jerry is she jumped at the chance. Jerry went on to ask 10 of her girlfriends if they would be interested in sharing the ownership, 9 of them also happened to be female jockeys.
One of the Owners, Ellie Cockram speaks to us about how they got involved and how it feels to be on the other side of the fence as a racing animal owner.
How did the girls come up with the idea of wanting to own a racing dog?
It was through owners that Jerry Noske rides for. Jerry messaged us and asked if we would be interested and we all came back to her excited and definitely interested. Our trainers Jackie and Gary bought the dog, who had already won a race, and that is how it all started.
What has the experience been like for you so far as an owners?
It has been exciting! He has won 2 races for us and we are looking forward to his campaign and our ownership in him. It is something different from the world of thoroughbred racing and good to be an owner.
What are your goals as a greyhound owner?
We just want to have a bit of fun and this gives us the opportunity to experience racing in a different light, as long as our dog is happy we are happy and he loves racing.
What socialising as a group has owning a racing animal created?
As a group we have been down to watch him run once, but it is hard because we have trackwork so early and the races are always on a trackwork or race night. We have a Facebook page so that we all know when he is racing and we get excited and chat about his runs and upcoming starts.
Is there anyone in the group who stands out as the most excited about your dog?
We are all excited to be a part of him, I think Misty (Bazeley) would be the one who is the most, but we all love the dog and love watching him.
What is the hounds name and who named it?
Market Frenzy is his race name and his kennel name is Bliss, he had that name already.
How would you describe Bliss?
He is a really cruisey friendly dog, he has a beautiful nature, but when he hears the lure begin he knows he is racing and he switches to racing dog, you can really see how much he loves racing.
Have you thought about post racing for Bliss and what will happen?
Well that’s the thing we all love him so much and we will probably all fight over him, I am going to be first on the list because I do all of the managing. We all love him so much. He will have a forever home as a pet after racing.
