Q&A with the Peel Regional Heat Winner
Q&A with the Peel Regional Heat Winner
WA Country Cups recently caught up with Nadia Bishop, the winner of the Peel Regional Heat, for the WA Country Cups Fashions on the Field.
Nadia will be one of nine regional heat winners, who will be taking part in the WA Country Cups Fashions on the Field State Final, to be held at Ascot Racecourse on Saturday 26th November.
Here’s what she had to say:
What do you love about country racing?
Around the world, racing can be an elitist sport, reserved for the rich and famous. Not so in Australia, where racing is for the people and nowhere more so than country racing.
I love the diversity of the people who attend a country meeting. The excitement of connections winning a provincial maiden can offer rival that of big race winners in town. To me that’s what racing is all about, people getting together to back or own a winner, or even just dress up and soak in the atmosphere of the race day.
How long have you been going to the races for and what are your favourite memories?
I have been attending race meetings since I finished school and started working in a racing stable. I then commenced my apprenticeship as a jockey and rode mainly at country tracks, spending most of my apprenticeship based in Kalgoorlie. One of my favourite memories in racing was winning the Leinster Cup on Hot Time for a small group of owners who could not have been more excited if we had won at Flemington!
I loved to ride at the outer tracks and see all the locals dress up and get into the spirit of the day.
Why do you enter Fashions on the Field?
I entered Fashions on the Field as my friend had made me a beautiful hat and I wanted to get a chance to show it off! My hat was the star of the outfit and is so different yet classical. I really enjoy finding and making those little touches that bring your look together.
Describe your style?
My style is definitely classic with a touch of vintage. I love drawing on past eras of fashion and bringing them up to date with a modern twist.
What tips do you have for ladies entering Fashions on the Field?
When entering fashions on the field make sure to wear something that you feel comfortable in and choose a style that suits you and your personality. You don’t have to spend a lot of money to create a really unique and glamorous outfit. It is all about the attention to detail. Keeping your eye out for a special item such as vintage hat pins or lace gloves can make all the difference for a polished look. The main advice I would give is to be creative, wear your outfit with confidence and above all have fun!
What are some of your favourite things about the Peel Region?
I am lucky enough to live in the peel region and to me it offers the best of all worlds. Its close proximity to the city, fabulous beaches and the rolling hills of the Darling Range make it the ideal place to live and visit. If u own or love horses it’s definitely the place to be.
What does it mean to you to be going to Ascot to compete in the final?
One of my best racing experiences I have had was during my working holiday in Newmarket UK. I was lucky enough to attend the Rowley Mile racecourse and watch Dawn Approach win the 2000 guineas. I also got to see Frankel do an exhibition gallop on that day.
To have the opportunity to go to Hong Kong for international day would be a dream come true and I feel honoured to compete for this prize at Ascot. I am passionate about racing and creating an outfit for race day is what I love to do!
