Ascot carnival plans are back on track for Scales Of Justice after impressing in a trial win at Lark Hill on Monday.
The Lindsey Smith-trained entire sat outside of the leader and kicked clear in the straight to score by 1 ½ lengths.
A delighted Smith said he was optimistic Scales Of Justice could return to his best after injury threatened to end his career.
A back complaint has prevented the son of Not A Single Doubt from racing since last year’s Group 1 Railway Stakes (1600m).
“He is back and couldn’t have gone much better,” Smith said.
“That’s as good as he could have gone.
“I’m confident I have him back to where he was.
“That’s what I wanted to see out of the trial.
“He will have one more trial and then resume.”
Smith said Scales Of Justice would race first-up in the Group 2 Lee Steere Stakes (1400m) before the Railway Stakes a fortnight later.
The six-year-old, a winner of nearly $1.5 in prize money, took out the Railway Stakes in 2016 when ridden by Douglas Whyte.
In a major vote of confidence Smith said in-form jockey Mitchell Pateman had been booked to ride Scales Of Justice in the Lee Steere
“I’m so grateful for the opportunity to ride the champ,” Pateman said.
