14 November, 2018
South Fremantle Women’s Football Club was awarded a $4000 sports grant from Community TAB as one of two groups to receive a grant this month, selected from over 300 sporting clubs that applied from around WA.
Community TAB has been awarding at least one grant each month to a local sporting club as part of an ongoing commitment to giving back to the WA community by supporting sport and recreation in WA.
Billie Godfrey who manages sponsorships at South Fremantle Women’s Football Club said the grant means they can now focus more on providing development, training and running courses for their women’s teams.
“Receiving this grant in an exciting new era of Women’s AFL Football will assist our club greatly in the competition and will provide an exciting pathway for young female footballers to explore and develop their strengths,” Ms Godfrey said.
“It also enables the senior league to retain talented sportswomen by ensuring that we put in place plans and goals to have Women’s Football at the forefront of a successful sport.
“Our club is a multicultural club, affiliated with South Fremantle Football Club which has been a driving force in the WAFL competition for over 100 years, our players range from 15 to 50 years old with some travelling from Donnybrook, Kalgoorlie and afar just to play with our club.
“This grant will enable our club to bring communities together by being able to develop and improve team training and improve our facilities, thus improving access to the national game for the whole community, which will encourage more activity, exercise and participation for women and sports fans far and wide, whilst encouraging more women to participate in sport with family and friends.”
Ms Godfrey added that the clubs aim is to promote the game of Women’s Football in the community, whilst encouraging players, coaches, volunteers and parents to develop an appreciation and enjoyment of the game.
CEO Richard Burt from Racing and Wagering WA (RWWA), which funds the initiative through Community TAB, said RWWA recognises the importance of grass roots sport throughout WA.
“We understand that it takes time and resources to keep a club such as the South Fremantle Football Club running so we are pleased to be giving the opportunity to help relieve this burden on the club, and that the grant also goes towards enriching lives through encouraging diversity,” Mr Burt said.
“RWWA has been supporting the WA sport and recreation industry for many years, providing millions of dollars over 10 years to the Department of Sport and Recreation (DSR) and, more recently, through Community TAB sponsoring the WA Football League and WA Integrated Football Program.”
Community TAB has been giving back to the WA community since 2014 through major partnerships, state-wide fundraising programs and sponsorship of prestigious events.
