William Pike Reduces Lead In Record Chase
23 May, 2016
Thoroughbred
William Pike’s pursuit of Paul Harvey’s state riding record has been cut to 12 ½ after a riding double at Belmont on Saturday.
Pike advanced to 104 metropolitan wins after he controlled the race on Military Reign and swept from last aboard, Star Exhibit.
Pike has an unassailable lead in the jockey’s premiership and will claim an eighth riding title at the completion of the 2015-16 racing season on July 30.
Harvey, inducted into the Western Australian Racing Hall Of Fame in 2014, rode 116 ½ winners in 1999-2000. He has won 12 jockey premierships.
Adam Durrant edged further in front in the trainer’s premiership following Star Exhibit’s second consecutive barnstorming victory this campaign.
Durrant, who is enjoying an extended break from racing, will officially hand over the stable reins to Jason Miller at the end of the current season.
Star Exhibit gave Durrant an 11 win buffer over, Grant Williams, who had to settle for minor placings with Universal Law, Presentatie and Express Dancer.
The status quo remains in the apprentice riding ranks with Clint Johnston-Porter maintaining his healthy lead over his next competitor, Aaron Mitchell.
