CWHRC Puts On Another Great Day Out
Westcoaster broke through for his maiden win on Sunday at just his eighth start in a race. Flying the flag for locally stood stallion Fly Like An Eagle, the two-year-old who was yet to finish any closer fourth at his previous attempts led all the way from barrier one, giving Mike Williams and Deni Roberts the win in the opener over the 2130m distance in a mile rate of 2:07:0.
Peter Anderson prepared the quinella in race two, with his runners Mummas Little Star and Brooklyn Mai Tai running first and second in the three-year-old westbred maiden. Driven by Trent Wheeler, Mummas Little Star who was having her first start in a race came from well back in the field, kicking away to win by 10.9m over her stablemate in 2:01:6 over the 1730m.
Ryan Bell reined and trained the winner in race three with Machs Bettor resuming after a five-month let up, winning impressively by 17.3m. Starting from barrier seven over the 1730m trip, the three-year-old settled in the one-out-two-back position throughout, with Bell peeling off three wide with 300m to go, claiming a very comfortable win in 1:59:9.
“Just taking it race by race, he’s got above average natural ability, he just lacks the maturity to go with it.”
“He had a break back then as he had four starts in a row all on 40-degree days and it just took its toll on him a bit.”
“Whatever he does for the rest of the season is a bonus, he’s got a bright future when/of the penny drops.” Bell said.
Trent Wheeler and Peter Anderson teamed up for a combined double on the card, with round two of their wins coming up in race four with Rusinol over the 2130m journey. In a winning mile rate of 2:02:6, the four-year-old settled behind the leader throughout, with Wheeler patiently waiting until the top of the straight, running down the leader to claim victory by 2.4m as well as breaking a 9-month hiatus between wins.
Consistent pacer Tux And Tails got the job done in race five for trainer Lang Inwood and driver Hayden Hancock. After restraining to the rear in the early stages, Hancock made his move three wide with just over two laps to go to battle it out in the breeze, claiming the win by 1.3m over the 2130m trip in 2:04:1.
$1.18 favourite Tenzing Bromac NZ remains unbeaten in the state, making it five from five since making the move from New Zealand last year. Having his first start since August 2021, the four-year-old was able to sit outside the leader throughout over the 1730m, going on to win by 6.7m in 1:58:2, giving Deni Roberts her second win in the cart for the day.
“He had a lingering soreness that we couldn’t quite diagnose so we just put him in the paddock for six months to give whatever it was time to heal,”
“He pulled up well (from yesterday’s run). Will look for another race for him in two weeks. I don’t like to back them straight up after such a long time off.” Skye Bond said.
The standing start over the 2500m went the way of Our Shooting Star who managed to overcome a scratchy start to settle three back on the pegs for almost 800m before settling in the one-one with just over two laps to go. With 200m to go, Shannon Suvaljko made his move three wide, going on to win by 1.9m in 2:04:4, getting the win for trainer Ross Olivieri.
Lang Inwood trained a double on the card with Our Surrogate taking out the last on the card for Emily Suvaljko. After doing it tough three wide for the final lap, the eight-year-old brought up his 12th career win at start 76, recording a winning mile rate of 2:00:8 over the 1730m.
