Micheal Ferguson has taken a narrow lead in the 2016-17 Garrard’s Junior Concession Driver Challenge after the opening two heats at Northam and Pinjarra.
19-year-old Ferguson snatch the leader’s position after combining with odds on favourite, Major Stare, for a hard earned victory at Pinjarra on Monday.
The son of Art Major was sent out a $1.60 chance, but met stubborn resistance from pacesetter, The Shadow Knows, who was gallant in defeat.
Ferguson had Major Stare ideally placed coming to the turn, sitting on the outside of the leader before wearing her down over the final stages.
Major Stare maintained his good form since joining up with trainer, Barry Howlett, posting two wins and two second placings from four WA starts.
Hot on the heels of Ferguson are Michael Grantham, Bailey McDonough and Jocelyn Young, who posted placings and Madeleine Young.
Lauren Jones got the series off to a flying start when Jasper Whity, at $18.90 and $2.90, scored an upset win at Northam.
Jones rated the bay gelding to perfection, leading throughout and staving off all challengers from the back markers to score well.
The series continues at Bunbury on Saturday and concludes at pacing headquarters, Gloucester Park, on November, 14.
The overall series winner will be presented with a $500 trophy and Garrard’s voucher as well as the opportunity of representing WA in the NSW Rising Star Series.
