Hayden Reeves walked away with training honours at Wagin with a training quadrella on Friday night and driving honours were well and truly with Trent Wheeler who racked up a driving treble on the nine-race card. The Spurr family are heavily involved in harness racing in Wagin, and Friday night saw Spurry’s Transport sponsoring all nine races.
The first went the way of Ta In Advance for trainer/driver Kaiden Hayter, with the three-year-old bringing up his second win in just eight starts. by locally stood stallion Advance Attack NZ, Ta In Advance started from barrier nine and found himself in the one-one position throughout, making his run three-wide with just over 200m to go to win by 5.4m over Ready To Attack in 2:05:0 over the 2180m. The win gave stallion Advance Attack NZ the race quinella.
Miss Tivoli NZ made her return to the races a winning one, with the seven-year-old leading all the way to win the second on the card for trainer and driver Michael Blakemore. With a troublesome past, there was plenty angst leading up to her race, but Blakemore was able to dictate terms throughout, going on to win by 8.4m in 2:06:9.
Aiden De Campo made the trip over from Capel and was rewarded with a race-to-race double, with $1.16 favourite The Good Life working his way to the lead soon after release point. Driven by Trent Wheeler, the four-year-old returned to the winner’s circle after a nine-month break from the track, bringing up his sixth career win in just 23 starts, recording a mile rate of 1:59:3 over the 2180m.
Wheeler and De Campo teamed up again in race five with the $1.60 favourite Pradason continuing his good form, with a last start fourth placing in the 1140m Dash for Cash at Bunbury and a win the week before that at Gloucester Park. In a mile rate of 2:00:0 over the 2180m journey
With almost 19 months between wins, Batavia Blackhole broke a 27-start losing sequence after he led all the way in race three for Reeves and Chris Playle. Playle copped a 13-day driving suspension for causing interference when he worked to the lead from barrier five. The stable walked away with the race quinella with stable mate Silent Reaction going down by 4.8m in 2:01:9 over the 1776m sprint trip.
The Reeves stable was represented by four runners in the standing start, with El Jessie coming out on top for driver Shane Butterworth over How Gouda She and Snorkel, with the stable walking away with the trifecta in race six. Starting off the 30m handicap, the five-year-old stepped cleanly and found herself behind the leader throughout over the 2540m, taking off three wide with 400m to go, she won with ease with a margin of 5.8m over her stable mates in 2:05:9.
Justa Reaction took out race seven with Hayden Reeves on board. The seven-year-old brought up his second career win at just his fourth start this season. With 14 starts under his belt, Justa Reaction was out of position at release point and after settling towards the back of the seven-horse field over the 2180m trip, he was able to flash home in the concluding stages to win by 1.9m in a mile rate of 2:04:7 at $31 odds, with Capricorn Joe giving the stable another race quinella on the card.
It was lucky start 53 for Gladys Gugman, with the long-standing maiden breaking through for her first win for Hayden Reeves and Trent Wheeler. After a last start third just five days earlier at Kellerberrin, the four-year-old double westbred mare lined up as the $3 favourite over the 1776m, and after settling at the rear in the last, she made her run with around 600m to go, claiming top prize by 3.1m over stablemate I See Fire in 2:04:8.
Racing returns to Wagin on the 10th of June.
