Misty Metal has blown her rivals away to take out her second Listed race victory in the Furphy-Summer Scorcher (1000m) at Ascot this afternoon.
The four-year-old was given a trial on December 24 following her last start second to Celebrity Dream in the Listed Jungle Dawn Classic (1400m), a plan that worked wonders for her today.
Jockey Shaun Mc Gruddy was positive in the early stages aboard the Robert and Todd Harvey-trained galloper, finding the front comfortably.
Misty Metal then left her rivals in her wake on the turn for home and was never in any danger of being beaten during the sprint trip.
The Celt flashed home to run second, while race favourite Gee Boss was credible back in third.
Co-trainer Todd Harvey said the trial helped Misty Metal with the drop in distance, but indicated he would consider giving her another chance up in trip.
“She can get pretty big in condition, she goes really well in the stable,” he said.
“We both agreed that she needed the trial, so we gave her the trial and it kept her right on song for today.
“I wouldn’t be worried about putting her up over 1400 again because she’s got such a high cruising speed.
“If she gets it soft, she’ll be dynamic in anything.”
Meanwhile, Miss West Coast has emerged as a genuine contender for this year’s feature two-year-old races, following her win in the Crown Perth Plate (1000m) at Ascot this afternoon.
After an impressive second to Amarillo Rose on debut last October at Belmont, Miss West Coast was sent out a short price favourite for today’s juvenile event.
The Safeguard filly over-raced in the early stages, which forced jockey Jarrad Noske to let her roll forward and settle outside pace makers Drinkwhatyoulike and Mia Dolce.
Despite the racing keenly, Miss West Coast was good enough to wear down her rivals and win by almost a length.
Trainer Trevor Andrews said Miss West Coast would take plenty of benefit from the run, ahead of the Magic Millions 2YO Classic at Pinjarra next month.
“She probably won’t have a run now until the end of the month and then into the Magic Millions,” he said.
“You try and chase blacktype with these nice fillies.
“We paid good money for this filly, so to add some blacktype would be really good.”
