Standardbreds are renowned as a tough breed of horse.
A defining example is local pacer Vultan Tin.
No superstar, but honest, courageous and durable.
At Gloucester Park on Friday, Vultan Tin will extend his remarkable campaign.
The bay gelding has been in work since December, 2016, and the Landmark Midvale Pace (2130m), will be his 54 start this preparation.
Reinsman Chris Voak, who has partnered Vultan Tin in 37 races this campaign, said he is in awe of the seven-year-old.
“He is the toughest local pacer I have driven,” Voak said.
“He can absorb hard work and punishment.
“I think he suits the way I drive and my style of racing.
“I can roll along and be aggressive with him.
“I can’t believe how tough he is.
“I’ve been fortunate to have picked up the drive and be associated with him.”
Voak said Vultan Tin’s iron reputation should not deflect from his skill and accomplishments on the track.
Since his campaign commenced 17-months ago he has won 9 races and been placed on 11 occasions.
His biggest scalp the Narrogin Cup before a stunning fourth behind Lazarus in the 2017 Inter Dominion Grand Final in December.
“I can’t believe how far he has come,” Voak said.
“If someone told me he would be racing competively in grand circuit races I wouldn’t have believed them.”
Voak said Costello has been the driving force behind Vultan Tin and is pleased his advice to the Coolup horseman fell on deaf ears.
“After he won the Narrogin Cup I told Phil the horse probably needs a break,” Voak said.
“Particularly if Phil was planning on targeting the Inters.
“I didn’t think the horse would get there, but thought he needed a short break.
“Phil believed otherwise and was proved correct.
“He said the horse thrives on hard work and doesn’t enjoy the paddock.
“He bred the horse and knows him better than anyone.”
