Perth Jockey And Trainers’ Premiership
13 June, 2016
Thoroughbred
It’s not often William Pike is overshadowed at a Perth meeting, but that was the case at Belmont on Saturday with Lucy Warwick dominating the programme.
Warwick had one of those days you dream about as a jockey when she rode four winners including Wink And A Nod in the Group 3 Hyperion Stakes.
Warwick celebrated the milestone with her father with Wink And A Nod, Elegant Blast, Cool Passion and The Flirt, all trained by, Justin Warwick.
Warwick’s quartet advanced her metropolitan season tally to 55 wins. She sits a clear second behind William Pike in the jockey’s premiership.
Pike looked set for another successful day with favourites, Presentatie, Romello and King River all considered top prospects on the card.
But after Presentatie and Romello flopped badly and King River couldn’t chase down, Cool Passion, it was Socially Unique who held firm.
The Vital Equine gelding, racing first-up for trainer, Alana Williams, flashed home with a well-timed run from near last and scored by a length.
It gave Pike 111 metropolitan wins for the 2015-16 racing season, putting him within reach of Paul Harvey’s state riding record of 116.5 wins.
Pike can close in on the 1999-2000 record when he partners, Moonshyne, State Solicitor, Royalic, Awesome As, Joyful Hope and See Me Sizzle at Belmont on Wednesday.
