Up-and-coming trainer Sarah Wall experienced one of her greatest thrills as a trainer last month, when promising pacer Wesley took out the $50,000 Champagne Classic at Gloucester Park.
Wesley upstaged an exciting field of two-year-olds in the Group 2 event, and took his stake earnings to just under $50,000 from six starts.
Wall, who is a part-owner of Wesley, said she was “surprised” by Wesley’s all the way victory in the Champagne Classic, and indicated the colt’s early speed would hold him in good stead for future races.
“We will probably have to make a few adjustments to make sure he is under control,” she said.
“We don’t want to lose that speed.”
Wall, who has held her trainers licence for a little more than six years, described training as a hobby before and after work, which, she said, meant plenty of early mornings and late nights.
“We have about four horses at home,” she said.
“We breed so we have a couple of babies around and a couple of old ones racing that keep things ticking over.
“We have a lot of support from my mum and my dad who help when we travel.”
Wesley will now be aimed towards more feature races, including the $125,000 Golden Slipper in July.
