“I said to Chris Lewis two weeks ago that we’re going to Northam to win on her 100th”
It may have taken four-year-old Remarkable Star 100 starts to break her maiden status, but her connections have never once been worried, with the double Westbred filly claiming the win at the milestone start for owner and trainer David Simmonds.
Now earning her connections in excess of $50,000 including bonuses, there wouldn’t be many other horses that have earned stakes to that degree without winning a race, but since taking the now four-year-old on in late 2019, she has had 85 starts for Simmonds and has saluted the judge 48 times in that period, placing 25 times in the past two years.
“Bob Fowler had about four horses for sale and other people took the good ones and she was the last one,”
“I offered him something out of her first win, and he said yes.”
Starting at $23 on Saturday night, Chris Lewis drove the mare out from barrier three where she was able to slot behind the leader and short-priced favourite soon after release point. Lewis was able to pop off the rails coming into the home straight to win by 2.3m in 2:02:5 with the earplugs still intact over the 2190m trip.
“When he actually came out she actually had to gain breath because she was virtually choking herself down.”
Simmonds expects that Remarkable Star will be handy enough in the level 1/L3 under $6000 HWOE mares’ races in the future and will be nominating her for this coming Monday’s meeting at Gloucester Park.
“She probably needs a spell, so probably towards the end of January I will give her one.
With David Simmonds 67th birthday coming up on Thursday the 23rd of December, what better way to celebrate than a win with your double Westbred maiden.
