Rocky Path Proves Her Worth
Trainer Vaughn Sigley is hoping Rocky Path’s upset maiden victory in the Singapore Turf Club Trophy (1200m) can be the launching pad to bigger races at Ascot later this year.
After four placings from her opening seven starts, Rocky Path, bought for $500 as weanling, broke through and proved too good for her more favoured rivals.
With the majority of supporters pinning their faith in Long Beach, who was backed into $1.80 favouritism, Rocky Path started as a $17 outsider.
But aided by a fast pace in front, Rocky Path settled in last position and weaved her way between runners in the straight.
Ridden by Pat Carbery, the three-year-old filly defeated Platinum Bullet by a half-length with a short-neck to Some Sort.
Sigley said Rocky Path deserved her win and was hopeful she could measure up to feature race company in several months.
“You just never know, but she does really well at home and everything has been really good with her,” Sigley said.
“The pace of the race suited, but she had been racing well without winning.”
Rocky Path has now racked up $77,600 in stake earnings.
Sigley said it proved you don’t need an expensive horse to win a Saturday race.
“I went to the sale not even looking at the breeding,” Sigley said.
“I was just going to walk around and pick out the best.
“And I thought she was the best-looking weanling out of the whole lot.”
