In March 2016, Racing and Wagering Western Australia, incorporating WA Country Cups and Community TAB, announced a state-wide racing fashion competition.
The WA Country Cups Fashions on the Field consists of nine regional heats held at major race meetings across the State, culminating in the Final at Ascot Racecourse on Saturday 26 November 2016, for a $25,000 prize.
On Sunday 17 July, the Port Hedland Turf Club’s Ladies Day hosted the Pilbara Regional Heat, which was taken out by local doctor, Sarah McEwan.
WA Country Cups caught up with Sarah to chat to her about her love for racing and racing fashion. Here’s what she had to say:
What do you love about country racing? For me personally, country racing is the highlight of my social calendar. I love nothing more than to piece together racing outfits, pulling together latest trends and adapting that to my own personal style. Country racing brings excitement and purpose for the women of the Pilbara to go all out, get dressed up and bring a little bit of elegance and glamour to enhance the raw beauty of our town.
How long have you been going to the races for and what are your favourite memories? Horse racing is in my blood. My grandfather was a passionate horse trainer all his life, and he attended the majority of local country race meets where I grew up until the ripe old age of 95.
I have been attending country race meets since I was a little girl, where he taught me how to place bets and what to look out for in a winner.
My favourite racing memories are from the race I attended with him – he always had great tips and more often than not I would come away having backed a hand full of winners to round out a fun day.
Why do you enter Fashions on the Field? I love fashion and in particular racing fashion. I love any excuse to get dressed up to the nines and interpret trends in an elegant way which stimulates my interest in entering Fashions on the Field.
Describe your style? My day to day style is more dramatic – I like one off pieces, I really dislike wearing the same outfit as others. I like to source individual statement pieces to accompany outfits rather copycat styling them to bring out my own personality.
In term of race wear I like to keep my style more elegant and glamorous rather than dramatic, trying to keep the look meticulous and sophisticated.
What tips do you have for ladies entering Fashions on the Field? Confidence is my biggest tip, not only for the stage but also in your outfit selection. If other ladies are anything like myself, they have researched for hours to come up with their chosen outfits (this is made more challenging in the country where online shopping is our only option), therefore you need to know your shape, know what cuts look best on your body and have no fear in making the necessary online purchase. Styling needs to be to your own personal taste and should be executed with courage and confidence.
What are some of your favourite things about the Pilbara Region? The fact that winter is non-existent. The raw beauty of the landscape. The sunsets. The ability to have no excuses for getting up and having beachside morning walks, as 99% of the time there is no rain.
What does it mean to you to be going to Ascot to compete in the final? As soon as I saw this opportunity advertised I began working on my ideas for racing outfits. I took leave from work in advance as even if I wasn’t successful in gaining entry into the final I was planning on going to Ascot for the atmosphere anyway. I am more than excited to be representing the Pilbara at the final. To take out the final would truly be a dream come true. As mentioned country racing is the highlight of my social calendar and I am forever thankful to the sponsors, WA Country Cups and RWWA for enabling the heats to be undertaking in regional areas to give country race fashion a chance to shine on centre stage at Ascot.
In 2016, Racing and Wagering Western Australia (RWWA) announced and exciting new initiative, the WA Country Cups Fashions on the Field.
The initiative is a state-wide racing fashions competition, which is open to fashionistas from all over WA.
The racing fashion event consists of regional heats held at major race meetings across the State. The winner of each heat will receive an invitation to compete in the WA Country Cups Fashions on the Field Final to be held Ascot Racecourse on Saturday 26th November 2016.
The winner of the Final will take home a $25,000 Racing Holiday and Spending Spree, which includes a seven night racing experience in Hong Kong courtesy of Motive Travel, $10,000 spending money thanks to TABtouch, as well as vouchers and gifts from Reny Kestel, Only One Ashley and Smales Jewellery.
