WA racing doffs its hat to Julie’s invincible spirit
Popular racing identity Julie Mitchell wears many hats. She’s a familiar figure at metropolitan and provincial tracks in colourful fedoras, berets and panamas but also workaday headgear such as helmets.
It’s more than an assortment of fashionable racewear and practical safety equipment. It’s a sign of the many roles and responsibilities she takes on in the WA racing world.
Trainer. Strapper. Trackwork rider. Mentor to young riders. Fashionista. Regardless of the role, Julie is well-known for her selfless an unstinting support for racing participants and horses.
So it was hardly surprising when several industry participants nominated the gifted horsewoman for the WA Spirit of Racing Award – and entirely fitting when the racing community tipped its hat to her years of hard work and dedication by granting her the inaugural award.
Julie was announced co-winner of the gong, presented by Racing and Wagering Western Australia (RWWA), alongside trainer Ross Price at the 2023 WA Thoroughbred Racing Awards on August 12.
Whether it be saddling a runner in her own right or strapping for other trainers, Julie said nothing beats the thrill and joy of a winning galloper.
RWWA Chief Racing Officer David Hunter congratulated Julie on the feat, describing her as someone who embodies the spirit of racing in WA.
“Julie’s work in helping trainers, jockeys, trackwork riders and stable staff is invaluable and has a positive impact on many,” he said.
“Her tireless contribution includes lending a helping hand to trainers at trackwork and on race day, while also mentoring riders coming through the ranks and educating young or difficult horses.
“Julie truly is a worthy WA Spirit of Racing Award recipient, given her outstanding commitment to thoroughbred racing.”
