Western Australian Racing to Celebrate Pride Month
The State’s racing industry will be loud and proud this week in honour of Pride month, with celebrations across all three codes set to take place at Western Australian racetracks, from 19-21 November.
Northam Race Club, Gloucester Park, Bunbury Trotting Club and Greyhounds WA Cannington will be showing their support to the LGBTQI+ community and encouraging diversity within the racing industry with a number of activities happening on-course.
In an effort to be brave for the better, on-course celebrations will include a jockey and driver in each race wearing Pride-inspired colours. Races will be renamed to highlight the week, with Pride themed rugs being awarded to the winning horse or greyhound, along with many other gestures of support.
Prominent harness driver Chris Voak will be the nominated driver showing his support to the LGBTQI+ community by wearing the Pride colours for his drives at the Gloucester Park and Bunbury meetings.
“This is an exciting industry for everybody to enjoy and be a part of and I’m looking forward to being able to showcase to the world that everyone is welcome in our industry,” Mr Voak said.
Racing and Wagering Western Australia’s (RWWA) General Manager People and Culture Matthew Thomas said he was thrilled to see the Western Australian racing industry embracing Pride month.
“It’s time that we let our community know that we are inviting and accepting of the LGBTQI community,” Mr Thomas said.
“It is fantastic to see the racing industry coming together in solidarity of and to exemplify inclusivity of the LGBTQI community.”
Celebrations will be occurring at the following race meetings:

- Gloucester Park – Friday 20 November 2020
- Bunbury Trotting Club – Saturday 21 November 2020
