Young Rugby Referee Wins Community TAB Official of the Year
Joondalup local Tyler Miller has been recognised as the 2019 Official of the Year at the RAC SportWest Awards, Western Australia’s premier sports awards, which was held at Optus Stadium Thursday 13 February 2020.
Over 500 people gathered at the awards to recognise excellence in sport and celebrate the achievements of WA sportspeople throughout 2019.
Community TAB proudly presented the award of Community TAB Official of the Year to 25 year old rugby referee Tyler Miller, who kicked off her refereeing career at just 12 years old.
Ms Miller said just being nominated for the award was a proud moment for her, and that she was humbled to be recognised for doing her job.
“Rugby is something I’ve been involved with for as long as I can remember. It’s quite rare that people are given the opportunity to turn their passion into a job, so I am incredibly grateful.”
“Receiving this recognition has encouraged me to reflect on my career so far and appreciate everyone that has supported me in doing what I love,” she said.
Ms Miller puts her success down to dedication and love for the sport, as well as countless hours of training.
“As cliché as it might sound, the best way to train is to referee as much as you can. Every game is different, so the best strategy to improve is getting as much experience as you can.”
“In addition, I also do two to three running sessions per week, two to three gym sessions, and technical training where I prepare and review for games.”
So far, Ms Miller’s career highlights include her debut in Paris in 2018 and being involved in the North American Olympic Qualifies in the Cayman Islands in 2019.
“These were unique experienced in destinations I would probably never been able to travel to if it wasn’t for rugby, so I am very grateful for the opportunities the sport gives me.”
The tradition of the RAC SportWest Awards began in 1956 as the Sportsman of the Year.
