Trainer Karen Kersley has received a welcome boost on the verge of the new year, with talented filly Rubic Rose taking out the Iron Jack Plate (1100m) for the two-year-olds at Ascot this afternoon.
Earlier this year, Kersley suffered a number of injuries, including a shattered pelvis, but the Rubick filly eased her pain temporarily this afternoon with a tough victory over her last start conqueror Beethoven.
Rubic Rose jumped well from the inside barrier and was able to find the lead in the early stages, before Beethoven eventually crossed to find the lead.
The filly was able to get to the outside of Beethoven in the home straight and got over the top of him in the concluding stages to win by just over a length.
Beethoven narrowly held off Angel Jupiter for second.
Kersley said it was a special victory for her and everyone involved in her stable, in particular Ray Vincent.
“It meant the world to us,” she said.
“It’s been a pretty horrible year for us this year and that win saved a lot of people.
“It’s tough road and it’s going to get tougher but I will make a full recovery.”
After finishing second on debut prior to today’s victory, Kersley said she was now hopeful the filly could have one more run this campaign and progress to feature juvenile races.
“Early on, I said to the owners ‘if you get the stake money now, it gives you a chance if you want to dream a little bit and go in the big races’,” she said.
“We always had an opinion of the horse, but you never like to be too bullish because sometimes you are wrong.
“As long as she pulls up right, we might dabble again.”
Meanwhile, Market Ruler has broken Dainty Tess’ Westspeed bonus’ record, taking out the David Grays Aglink Handicap (1000m).
The three-year-old was off a seven day back-up prior to today’s event and had to carry an extra 2.5kg from her win last week, but it proved to be no barrier for her.
Jockey Kate Witten allowed the filly to stride forward outside the leader The Finest.
The filly booted clear at the top of the home straight and went on to score a comfortable 1 ¾ length win to race favourite Excise Free.
Trainer Simon Miller described the filly as a “ripper” and indicated he would now likely give her another shot at a blacktype event against the older horses.
