Wilson was renowned as a calm rider, shrewd tactician and an excellent judge of space in a career that commenced in 1953 as an apprentice to Reg Harper. Wilson won three Perth Cups on Fairetha (1958-59) and Meliador (1979). In the 1978-79 season, Wilson became the first jockey to ride 100 winners in a season, earning nomination for the WA Sports Star award. Wilson also rode with success internationally on the Singapore-Malay circuits from 1960 until 1964 and 1967 to 1976. He topped the Singapore Jockey’s Premiership in 1964 and was inducted into the Singapore Racing Hall Of Fame for his prolific winning deeds.
