Thoroughbred stewards’ inquiry – Jockey Shaun McGruddy
Racing and Wagering Western Australia stewards conducted an inquiry on 30 January 2024 in relation to an incident following the running of Race 5 at Belmont Park on Wednesday, 24 January 2024.
At the inquiry, several statements from jockeys that had engagements in the race – which had been made available to Mr McGruddy prior to the inquiry – were tabled, in addition to hearing submissions from Mr McGruddy.
Subsequently, Mr McGruddy pleaded guilty to a charge issued under AR228 (e), with the particulars relating to Mr McGruddy verbally insulting Apprentice Brandon Louis shortly after passing the winning post, when riding Saulok in Race 5, while Mr Louis was acting in the course of his duties in the racing industry when riding Our Rocky Bay in that race.
In his submissions, Mr McGruddy accepted the evidence in the matter as reflected by his plea of guilty, apologised and expressed remorse for his conduct.
The matter was adjourned by stewards to determine the appropriate penalty.
In accordance with Local Rule 22, stewards directed that Mr MrGruddy shall not ride or otherwise take part in a race pending the outcome of the inquiry.
