Thoroughbred
RWWA Stewards today conducted an inquiry concerning the withdrawal of TRAVINATOR prior to the running of Race 4 at Belmont Park on Saturday 3 September 2016, following a report received from the Perth Racing Panel Veterinarian that the gelding was discovered to have a substance on or within its nostrils when arriving at the barriers for the race and subsequent reports from the ChemCentre.
Evidence was taken from RWWA Veterinarian Dr J Medd, Perth Racing Panel Veterinarian Dr C McMullen, Barrier Attendant Ms S Pescud, ChemCentre Analyst Ms M Raghvani and the trainer of TRAVINATOR Mr D Pearce.
After considering the evidence, Stewards issued a charge against Mr Pearce under AR178E which states;
AR.178E.
(1) Notwithstanding the provisions of AR.178C(2), no person without the permission of the Stewards may administer or cause to be administered any medication to a horse on race day prior to such horse running in a race.
(2) The Stewards may order the withdrawal from a race engagement any horse that has received medication in contravention of subrule (1) of this rule.
The particulars of the charge were that at Belmont on 3 September 2016 shortly before Race 4, Mr Pearce did administer the medication “Nature’s Botanical” which contains the prohibited substance ‘camphor’ to the nostril area of TRAVINATOR prior to the horse proceeding to the barrier for that race.
The inquiry was adjourned at the request of Mr Pearce in order for him to seek legal advice prior to responding to the charge.
Mr Pearce was also advised that Stewards are considering the application of Local Rule 10 to suspend his licences pending outcome of the inquiry. Mr Pearce was afforded fourteen days (14) to present a submission in response to the possible application of this rule.
