Thoroughbred stewards’ inquiry – trainer Mr Darren Robert Taylor
Racing and Wagering Western Australia (RWWA) stewards have concluded an inquiry in relation to the alleged conduct and behaviour of trainer Mr Darren Robert Taylor between May 2021 and July 2021, and March 2022 and May 2022 towards two female stable persons whilst employed or working at his stable.
Mr Taylor pleaded guilty to two (2) charges pursuant to AR 233(c).
AR233 (c) states:
AR 233 Other misconduct offences
A person must not:
- (c) engage in sexual harassment of a person employed, engaged in, or participating in the racing industry.
The offending related to the sending of electronic messages.
In the interests of the two stable persons, one of whom was 17 years of age at the time of the alleged conduct and behaviour, their names and further particulars of the charges will not be disclosed.
When considering the matter of penalty, stewards considered amongst other things (in no particular order of priority):
- Mr Taylor’s guilty pleas, clear record, and remorsefulness
- The content of the offending material
- The age of the employees
- The consequential effects these matters have had on those involved
- Any penalty must contain a level of a deterrence factor, both general and specific, as such conduct will not be tolerated in the industry, and severe penalties will ensue
- Mr Taylor’s personal circumstances.
Taking into account all matters, stewards determined:
In relation to Charge One (1), Mr Darren Robert Taylor be disqualified for eighteen (18) months.
In relation to Charge two (2), Mr Darren Robert Taylor be disqualified for twelve (12) months.
These penalties are to be served cumulatively. Further, the stewards directed that on the principle of totality that a reduction of six (6) months be applied thereby resulting in a total penalty of two (2) years disqualification, effective immediately.
