Thoroughbred – stewards’ inquiry update – Trainer Brock Lewthwaite
Racing and Wagering Western Australia stewards yesterday resumed the inquiry concerning trainer Brock Lewthwaite in relation to reports from the Chem Centre in Perth and Racing Analytical Services Ltd (Vic) that testosterone and boldenone were detected in the sample taken from Star Present following it competing in and winning race four at Ascot on 9 April 2022.
Considerable documentary evidence of both laboratories has been provided, as requested by Mr Lewthwaite’s counsel.
At yesterday’s hearing, extensive evidence was heard via Zoom from Professor Thomas Tobin, called by counsel for Mr Lewthwaite in relation to a broad range of matters, including analytical and veterinary. This included admitting into evidence a comprehensive report prepared by Professor Tobin in response to the documentary and other evidence provided.
Further evidence was also heard from RWWA Head of Veterinary Services Dr J Medd, Chem Centre representative Dr B Dorakumbura and trainer Mr Lewthwaite.
During more than four hours of proceedings, substantial technical and other expert evidence, supplemented by reference to published papers, was brought forward.
Due to the amount of material and its technical nature, the matter was adjourned by the stewards for a transcript of the evidence to be prepared to assist all parties in properly considering the evidence and addressing the matter in response to the charge that was issued under AR240 (2) on 8 July 2022, when the inquiry commenced.
The matter will be resumed once the transcript is available on a date to be determined, in order to hear further submissions.
