Enzo Crudelli had one of his career highlights on Perth Cup night last year, when Equanimity saluted in the feature event.
This year, that greyhound returns, but he feels it might be one of his lesser known chasers that steals the limelight of the reigning greyhound of the year.
Demon Bale and Equanimity are two of Crudelli’s six chasers engaged in the heats of the Sky Racing Perth Cup, while he also has three chasers engaged for the heats of the Sky Racing Galaxy (715m).
Demon Bale, a winner at 27 of his 81 career starts, has barrier two in the seventh heat of the Perth Cup, which features Andrea Dailly’s Hecton Bale, Paul Stuart’s Mandjoogordap and Dave Hobby’s Mendoza Monelli.
Despite the son of Bella Infrared not having a start since March 3, Crudelli said he still had high hopes he would be able to upstage his more fancied rivals.
“He’s probably a run short, but he has drawn well,” Crudelli told TABradio’s The Sports Daily.
“Mandjoogoordap is a quick beginner, but he can lob in behind them as well.
“The eight is pretty handy as well, Hecton Bale.”
TABtouch rates Demon Bale a $9 chance, behind Hecton Bale, who has opened a $1.75 favourite.
Meanwhile, the task for Equanimity doesn’t look to be a much easier, with the defending champion having his first start since March 10.
Equanimity comes up against Trouper Monelli, Hasten Slowly and Ramifications, who all join Equanimity in single figure odds in the fourth heat of the evening.
Crudelli said the son of Barcia Bale, who has drawn box six, will be favoured by a vacant box five on Saturday night, but was more hopeful than confident.
“The heat is strong…there are a lot of quick beginners in it,” he said.
“We have a vacant box on the inside, and box one, two, three and four are pretty quick.
“If he can get around them, then he will be a chance.”
Crudelli said he rated Black Bombshell as a “dark horse” for the Perth Cup series, while he rated Allen Mike as a serious contender in the Galaxy, and said he was in the “hottest form of his career” at the moment.
The three heats of the Galaxy open up Saturday night’s program at 7.05, while the first of the Perth Cup heats jump at 8.12.
