Sunset Spitfire Shooting for Legs 11
Star WA sprinter Sunset Spitfire returns to Cannington this evening in a heat of the Winter Sprint where he will look to maintain his unbeaten run on WA soil.
The David Hobby trained son of Mepunga Blazer has had 16 career starts for 14 wins with his only two defeats taking place when campaigning in Victoria.
Sunset Spitfire last raced at Cannington on May 1 when he hooned around the 520 metre circuit in a slick 29.60 defeating multiple Group 1 winner Tommy Shelby by 2 lengths.
At his most recent performance on May 13 he fished 6th over the 515 metres behind Perth Cup winner Tiggerlong Tonk.
If anywhere near his top you can expect Spitfire to jump and run his rivals off their legs and bring up his 11th victory at headquarters.
The betting certainly expects box seven to pose no problems for the warm favourite with Sunset Spitfire’s price firming from $1.70 in to $1.55 on the fixed odds betting with TABtouch.
Trainer David Hobby has a particularly strong hand in this heat with his kennel also providing the second and third favourites with Stout Monelli paying $4.60 and Withers Monelli at $7. The talented Projectory is rated a $7.50 hope while Star Book is next in betting at $13.
The second of the Winter Cup heats is a little more open with the well drawn Wise Thunder the current $2.65 favourite on fixed odds with TABtouch.
The Michael Hine trained sprinter who ran 4th in the Group 1 Perth Cup final in April last had box one when finishing runner-up behind Projectory in a Free To All in a swift 29.70 seconds three starts ago. That sort of performance here would see Wise Thunder right in the picture again.
On the second line of betting is Sunset Toxic at $2.90 with Sir Monty at $3.70 and all other runners in double figure odds.
It looks a night where punters can end on the right side of the ledger – smart types such as Manzu and Domino Mac look well placed while Redcap Monelli looks a strong hope in race 7.
