WA Derby winner West On Augie has qualified fastest for the final of next weekend’s Paradise Street Final (600m), following an impressive first try at the distance in last night’s heats.
West On Augie got a near perfect getaway from the boxes and was able to find the lead on the first turn from box five, while second favourite Poppy Monelli moved into second place.
Poppy Monelli tried desperately over the concluding stages to chase down West On Augie, but it was in vein, as he fought off the challenge, as two of Western Australia’s up and coming chasers turned on a high quality display of chasing.
Astrozone and Techno filled third and fourth placings to qualify for next week’s final, while Juda Lomar is the first reserve.
In the opening heat, Quick Jagger made it two wins in a row since returning to Perth from his Sandown Cup run, with a relatively comfortable victory over kennelmate West On Hawkeye.
Quick Jagger received box seven for his heat, and was a little slow away from the boxes, with Moment To Jive the fastest away from box one.
However, Quick Jagger was able to muster enough speed out of the home straight the first time and get in front of Moment To Jive, while West On Hawkeye stayed in touch with the pair.
On the turn for home, West On Hawkeye tried to run down Quick Jagger, but the star WA stayer found another gear near the winning post and did enough to hold off the kennelmate in a time of 34.71, marginally slower than West On Augie’s 34.70.
Meanwhile Trouper Monelli returned to the winners circle for the first time since his Perth Cup success in April, with a win in the Box 1 Restaurant Free For All (520m).
